Quartet A free daily word groups puzzle: sort 16 words into 4
Sort sixteen word tiles into four hidden groups of four. A fresh hand-made board every day, and four chances to spare.
About Quartet
Quartet is a calm daily word puzzle about spotting what things have in common. Sixteen paper tiles sit on the board, and every one of them belongs to exactly one of four hidden groups of four. Pick four cards you think belong together and lock them in. If you are right, the group locks into a coloured band with its name. If you are wrong, one of your four wax-seal chances cracks. Three out of four? Quartet says Three of four, so you know to swap just one card.
The groups go from gentle to sly. The gentle group is a plain category such as fruits or school subjects. The two middle groups need a closer look, and the sly group is wordplay: words hiding a smaller word, words that sound like letters or numbers, anagrams, or words that all make a new word with the same ending, such as foot, snow and hand with ball. Every board is hand-written, with one easy, two medium and one tricky group, and every tile is checked so that it fits only one group on its board. Some tiles are red herrings that look as if they fit somewhere else, so read them all before you commit.
There is a new board every day at midnight UTC, the same for everyone. Each week has a ribbon theme, such as Kitchen, Ocean, Music or Space, and one group on every board of that week belongs to the theme. Find the ribbon group seven days in a row to seal the week's ribbon. Missed a day? The archive holds every board since Quartet began, and once you have played today's puzzle, practice mode deals you past boards for as long as you like.
When you finish, the results card draws your solve path as shapes, one row per guess, so you can see how you got there and share it as plain text without spoilers.
Tips: look for the sly group first, because the wordplay often hides in plain sight. Say the words out loud to catch sound-alikes. If a tile fits two groups in your head, it probably belongs to the one you have not found yet. Use Mix to deal the cards in a new order when you feel stuck, and remember that solving the sly group first earns a bonus. Your streak, stats, ribbons and a puzzle in progress are saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in.
How to play
Tap four cards that you think share something, then tap Lock in. A correct group locks into a coloured band; a wrong guess costs one of four chances, and three right cards out of four shows "Three of four!". Mix deals the cards in a new order and Clear drops your picks. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move, Space to pick a tile, Enter to lock in, S to mix and D to clear. P or Esc pauses and M mutes.

FAQ
- Is the daily puzzle the same for everyone?
- Yes. The board depends only on the date in UTC, so everyone gets the same sixteen tiles, and a new board appears at 00:00 UTC.
- What does "Three of four!" mean?
- Three of the four tiles you picked belong to the same group. Swap one tile and try again. A guess you already tried doesn't cost another chance.
- What is the weekly ribbon?
- Each week has a theme. One group on every board that week belongs to it. Find the ribbon group on all seven days, in the daily or from the archive, to seal the week's ribbon.
- How do I unlock practice mode?
- Play today's daily puzzle, win or lose. Practice then deals you boards from the archive, as many as you like.
- How is the score worked out?
- Each group is worth 100 to 400 points by difficulty, every unused chance adds 100, and solving the sly group first adds 150. Only today's daily counts for the leaderboard.
- Does my progress save?
- Yes. Your streak, stats, ribbons and a puzzle in progress are saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in.
