About Brain Bites

Brain Bites is a free daily trivia quiz you can finish over a cup of tea. Every day brings ten fresh general-knowledge questions, each with four possible answers and fifteen seconds on the clock. The clock is a chocolate-chip cookie that loses a bite every second, and whatever is left of the cookie when you answer becomes your speed bonus. Answer quickly and correctly to build a streak: every right answer in a row is worth a little more than the one before.

The questions cover nine categories: science, nature, geography, history, art and music, food, sport, space and language. The Daily 10 always mixes at least eight of them, starts gently and gets harder towards the end, so the last three questions are where the big scores are won. Everyone gets the same ten questions on the same day, which makes it a good quiz to compare with friends and family.

More than 1,200 questions were written for the game, and every one is about a well-established fact rather than news or current records, so nothing goes out of date. After each answer a short "Did you know?" line tells you something extra about the topic, whether you got it right or not. You will learn something new in almost every round.

Stuck on a question? Spend coins on a lifeline. The 50/50 removes two wrong answers, and Skip swaps the question for another one from the same category without breaking your streak. You earn coins for every right answer and for finishing the Daily 10, so the real decision is when to use them.

When you have finished today's ten, keep playing in category practice, which works through every question in a category without repeats, or try a Mixed bag of ten random questions. Your stats card tracks your daily streak, your best score, your fastest answer and your accuracy in every category, so you can see where your knowledge is strongest. Brain Bites works on phones, tablets and computers, needs no download and saves your progress automatically.

How to play

Tap the answer you think is right, or press 1 to 4 (or A to D) on a keyboard. You have 15 seconds per question; the faster you answer, the bigger your speed bonus. Each right answer scores 100 points plus up to 50 for speed, and a streak of right answers adds up to 50 more per question. Use 50/50 (press H) to remove two wrong answers or Skip (press S) to get a different question; each costs coins and can be used once per round. Press P or Esc to pause and M to mute.

FAQ

Is the Daily 10 the same for everyone?
Yes. The ten questions depend only on the date in UTC, so everyone gets the same set on the same day, and a new set starts at 00:00 UTC. Your first Daily 10 of the day counts for your streak and the leaderboard; replays are just for fun.
How is my score worked out?
A right answer is worth 100 points, plus a speed bonus of up to 50 points for whatever is left of the cookie timer, plus a streak bonus of 10 points for each right answer in a row before it, up to 50. Wrong answers and time-outs score nothing and reset the streak. A perfect, lightning-fast round scores 1,850.
How do coins and lifelines work?
You start with 60 coins and earn 5 for every right answer, 20 for finishing the Daily 10 and 30 more for a perfect 10 out of 10. A 50/50 costs 20 coins and a Skip costs 30. Each lifeline can be used once per round. You can also watch an optional ad on the results screen for 40 bonus coins.
Will the answers go out of date?
No. Brain Bites only asks about well-established facts, such as how many bones are in the human body or who painted a famous picture. There are no questions about current champions, record holders or recent news.
Can I practise one subject?
Yes. Pick any of the nine categories on the home screen for ten questions from that subject. Practice works through the whole category before any question comes back, starting with easier questions in each round.
Does my streak and progress save?
Yes. Your coins, streak, best scores and stats are saved on this device automatically, and to your account when you are signed in.
