Lighthouse Escape A free escape room game in a stormy lighthouse

Trapped in a lighthouse by a storm: search five painted rooms, crack the keeper's locks, light the great lamp and flag the harbour for a boat.

About Lighthouse Escape

A point-and-click escape room in a stormy lighthouse

Lighthouse Escape is a free online escape room game you can play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install. A storm has shut you inside Wrenhaven Light, an old lighthouse on a lonely rock. The keeper has gone ashore, the sea door is sealed, and the only way off the rock is to bring the great lamp back to life and call the harbour for a boat. Five hand-painted rooms are stacked up the tower: the Keeper's Room, the Store Room, the Watch Room, the glass Lantern Room and the windy Gallery outside.

Look, think, unlock

Tap anything in a room to look at it, open it or pick it up. Items fly into your bag. Select one and tap where to use it, or tap a second item to combine the two into something new. Paper clues you read, such as a calendar, a tide board, a tune card and a chart of flag signals, are kept in your journal so you can check them at any time. Every clue you need is somewhere in the lighthouse.

The puzzles are the heart of the game. Crack a shape lock with chalk marks hidden around the keeper's room, ring a tune on three ship's bells, line up the rings of the great lens, light the lamp, and flag a message to the harbour with semaphore. The last puzzle is a riddle that ties the calendar, the tide board and the keeper's rhyme together.

Hints when you want them

Stuck? The lantern button gives three levels of help for your current goal: a gentle nudge, then a pointer that lights up the right spot, and finally the answer. You never lose an item by using it in the wrong place, and you can never lock yourself out, so you can try ideas freely.

Tips

  • Turn round in every room with the arrow buttons. Each room has two to four walls to search.
  • Read every note. The journal keeps it, and most puzzles need two clues put together.
  • If an item seems useless on its own, try combining it with another one.
  • Small bells ring high and big bells ring low.
  • In the flag puzzle, each letter is a pair of arm positions as seen from the harbour.

Short sessions, saved progress

Expect a first escape to take about 15 to 20 minutes. Every single action is saved, so you can stop at any time and continue later on the same device. After you escape you get a rating of up to three lanterns, based on how many answer hints you needed, plus your escape time. There are achievements for escaping without hints, for a swift escape and for examining every spot in the tower.

How to play

Tap or click things in the room to look at them, open them or pick them up. Tap an item in your bag to select it, then tap where to use it, or tap a second item to combine them. Turn to the other walls with the arrows beside the caption. On a keyboard: arrow keys turn, Tab or the up and down arrows move between spots, Enter uses the spot, 1 to 6 pick an item, H opens a hint and J the journal. P or Esc pauses and M mutes.

FAQ

Does my escape save?
Yes. Every action is saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in, so you can close the game and continue later from the menu.
Can I get stuck or lose an item I need?
No. An item is only used up where it belongs, and a wrong try simply keeps the item. Every puzzle can always be solved from where you are.
How do hints work?
Tap the lantern button at the top. The first hint is a nudge. A pointer that highlights the right spot opens 20 seconds later, and the full answer 20 seconds after that. Using answer hints lowers your lantern rating.
How long does an escape take?
A first escape usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and a replay can be much quicker once you know the tower. Your time only counts while you are playing, not while the game is paused.
Do I need the sound on?
No. Sound adds the bells, the gulls and the surf, but every puzzle can be solved with the sound off: the bells hang at different heights and the tune card shows them the same way.
Is Lighthouse Escape free?
Yes. It is free to play in your browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to download.
