About Ladder Leap

Ladder Leap is a free online snakes and ladders game for two to four players, and it runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer with nothing to install. Race your pawn up the board to the last square (square 100 on Classic, 56 on Quick): climb the ladders, slide down the snakes, and play power cards to bend the luck your way. It is the classic family board game, made quicker and a little more tactical, and it is friendly enough for the whole family.

The rules are the ones you know. Roll the die and hop that many squares. Land on the foot of a ladder and you climb to its top. Land on a snake's head and you slide all the way down its curly body to its tail. The first pawn to reach the last square wins. If you roll too much, you bounce back from the end of the board, or you can switch on Exact finish and wait for the number you need.

The twist is the gift squares. Land on a gift and you draw a power card into a hand of three. A Snake Shield blocks the next snake that would bite you. Double Roll gives you two rolls in one turn. Swap Places trades squares with a rival, which is perfect when someone races ahead. Ladder Boost makes your next ladder climb one and a half times as far. Second Chance lets you roll again after you have seen your roll, and Lucky Nudge changes your roll by one, up or down. Cards are open for everyone to see, and you choose when to play them, so every turn has a small decision in it: roll now, or play a card first?

You can play two ways. Quick is a small 7 by 8 board with its gift squares closer together and a card in everyone's hand from the start, and it takes about five minutes. Classic is the full 10 by 10 board and takes about twelve minutes; an unfinished Classic or Quick game is saved and waits on the menu as Continue. Choose who plays: you always take the first seat, and each other seat can be an easy bot, a normal bot, a friend who shares your phone, or empty. Three boards for each length are picked at random, and you can dress the board as a jungle, a candy land or outer space; candy unlocks with your first win and space with three.

Your rivals have their own styles. Pip, Bunty and Chiku play for fun and slip now and then. Mira, Dev and Tara use their cards well, so beat them and you have earned it. Dice and cards come from one fair seeded generator for everyone, and the dice are never weighted.

Tips: play Double Roll when there are no snakes in the next twelve squares, keep Swap Places for the leader, save Second Chance for the moment a roll would land on a snake's head, and play Ladder Boost when a ladder is within one roll. Win games to earn achievements and climb the best-score list. Earn bonus points for every ladder, shield save and card you play, with more for beating more rivals.

How to play

Tap the die (or press Space or Enter) to roll. Your pawn hops that many squares: ladders lift you up and snakes slide you down. Gift squares give you a power card. Tap a card to play it: Double Roll, Swap Places and Ladder Boost go before you roll; Second Chance and Lucky Nudge go after you see the roll, then tap the die again to move. Snake Shield works by itself. Press 1, 2 or 3 to play a card from the keyboard. First to the last square (100 on Classic, 56 on Quick) wins. P or Esc pauses and M mutes.

FAQ

Are the dice fair?
Yes. Every roll, yours and the bots', comes from one uniform seeded generator and is never weighted. Cards are drawn from a fair deck the same way, and every player can see every card.
What is the difference between Quick and Classic?
Quick uses a small 7 by 8 board (56 squares) with its gift squares closer together and a free card each, and takes about five minutes. Classic uses the full 10 by 10 board and takes around twelve minutes.
What happens if I roll more than I need to reach the last square?
By default you bounce back from the last square by the extra squares. Switch on Exact finish in the menu if you would rather stay put until you roll exactly the number you need.
Can I play with friends on one phone?
Yes. In the menu, tap an empty or bot seat until it says Friend, then take turns tapping the die and passing the phone. You can mix people and bots, up to four players.
Will my game be saved if I close the page?
Yes. A game in progress is saved as you play and offered as Continue on the menu. Your best score, wins, achievements and board themes are saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in.
How do I unlock the other board themes?
Win your first game against the bots to unlock the Candy theme, and win three games to unlock Space.
