Corner Pocket A free pool game with real spin, rivals and trick shots

8-ball pool against a ladder of four rivals with real spin and an aim guide, plus 30 trick shots and a daily trick shot.

About Corner Pocket

Corner Pocket is a free online 8-ball pool game you can play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to download and no sign-up. The table stands upright, so it fits a phone held in one hand, and the first shot is a gentle practice pot that shows you how aiming and power work before your first real match begins.

The rules are classic 8-ball. After the break the table is open, and the first ball you pot cleanly makes you solids or stripes. Pot one of your own and you shoot again; miss and your rival steps up. Fouls give the other player ball in hand anywhere on the table: potting the cue ball, missing every ball, or hitting the wrong group or the eight first. Clear your seven, then pot the eight to win. Pot the eight early, or scratch on it, and the match is lost.

What makes Corner Pocket different is the ladder of four rivals, each with a habit you can learn to exploit. Dot, the eager owl, always goes for the nearest pot and hits it far too hard. Marlow, the careful heron, plays safe whenever a pot looks risky. Juno, the showy fox, loves banks and long pots and scratches more than she should. The Countess, a regal cat, plans her position with spin and rarely misses. Beat a rival to unlock the next one, and earn bronze, silver and gold medals for winning, for long runs and for clearing the table in one visit. Medals unlock new cloth colours.

The ball physics are our own: rolling and sliding friction, cushions that take side spin, and a spin selector on the cue ball for draw, follow and english. The aim guide shows where the cue ball first makes contact and where both balls will go. Against the stronger rivals it gets shorter, so your own judgement counts more.

Trick shots are a second mode: 30 hand-made layouts such as combos, rail runners and tight gaps, each with up to three stars. A new daily trick shot appears every day, the same for everyone, and solving it day after day builds your streak. Trick stars unlock new cue styles.

Tips: before every shot, think about where the cue ball will stop, not just the pot. Use draw to bring the cue ball back and follow to roll it forward. Against Marlow, take on the hard pots, because he will often hand you the table. Against Juno, leave the cue ball near a cushion to tempt her into a scratch. A match takes about five minutes, and an unfinished match is saved between shots, so you can stop at any time.

How to play

Drag anywhere on the table to turn the aim around the cue ball, then pull the power bar on the right down and let go to shoot (drag it back to the top to cancel). Tap the cue-ball badge to set spin, and use the two small arrow buttons to fine-tune the aim. With ball in hand, drag the cue ball to a free spot. With a mouse, click or drag on the table to aim, then drag the power bar. On a keyboard, Left and Right aim (hold Shift for fine aim), Up and Down set power, Space shoots, W A S D set spin and Enter places the cue ball. P or Esc pauses and M mutes. Pot your group of seven, then the eight.

FAQ

Is Corner Pocket free, and does it work on my phone?
Yes. It is free and runs in the browser on Android phones, iPhones, tablets and computers, with nothing to download. The table is upright so it suits a phone held in portrait.
What are the rules?
Standard 8-ball. The first ball you pot cleanly after the break makes you solids or stripes. Potting your own ball keeps your turn. Fouls give your rival ball in hand: potting the cue ball, hitting nothing, or hitting the wrong group or the eight first. Pot all seven of yours and then the eight to win.
How is my score worked out?
Each of your balls is worth 10 points and the eight 50. Consecutive pots in one visit add a run bonus, a foul costs 10, and a win adds 200. The total is multiplied by the rival's level: Dot ×1, Marlow ×1.5, Juno ×2 and the Countess ×3.
How do I unlock the other rivals and styles?
Beat a rival to unlock the next one on the ladder. Medals from wins unlock new cloth colours, and stars from trick shots unlock new cues.
What if a rival keeps beating me?
After three losses in a row against the same rival, the next match offers to start with ball in hand. Those matches don't award medals.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Records, medals, trick stars and settings are saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in. An unfinished match is saved between shots and continues when you come back.
